Nice: France’s most scenic airport approach and the third in the world

The beauty of the Côte d’Azur and the feeling of almost landing on the Mediterranean have long entranced passengers coming into Nice Airport, which has just been voted as having the most scenic approach in France and the third in the world.

A PrivateFly poll of more than 200 airports around the world has ranked Nice Côte d’Azur as having the third most scenic approach in the world. The southern French airport came in just behind Donegal in Ireland and Barra in Scotland in the global ranking and was first in France, as reported by the France 3 Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur website.

A different landscape every time

A panel of travel experts and aviation fans pre-selected the best airport approaches, with more than 7,000 internet users then voting for their favourites. The approach to Nice was “simply amazing” according to one of the poll participants, who added, “The landscapes and light of the Côte d'Azur change every time you land and take off and it felt like we were landing on the sea.”

A total of 129 airports were ranked in the February poll. The top ten are as follows: Donegal (Ireland), Barra (Scotland), Nice Côte d’Azur (France), Orlando Melbourne (USA), St Maarten and Saba (Lesser Antilles), Queenstown (New Zealand), Billy Bishop Toronto City (Canada), London City (UK), and Aosta Valley (Italy).

A number of other French airports, among them Marseille Provence, made PrivateFly’s 2019 selection but missed out on a place in the top ten.
